Transparent French Complete Edition is a full and varied language learning course that will take you from being an absolute beginner to a competent French speaker. The software is very well put together and allows you to learn at your own pace and in your own style. The lessons cover all the important and common situations you are likely to find yourself in in a French speaking country so by the end you should feel confident travelling abroad. The price is very reasonable for such a large course so we think Transparent French Complete Edition offers great value for money. Read on to see if you agree.
Transparent French Complete Edition comes as either a boxed version or a download version. Both have exactly the same content and are the same price, which is strange as usually we would expect a discount on the download version of a product. So, unless you are in a huge hurry we would recommend ordering the boxed version as it's always handy to have a CD sitting on a shelf in case you ever need to reinstall. Installing for the first time is very easy and mainly just consists of clicking 'next' a few times until the job is done. Even complete computer novices won't have any problems here.
When you start up Transparent French Complete Edition you will be greeted with the main menu which lets you select which part of the suite you would like to use. The user interface looks pretty good here, but could do with a little bit of polishing in our opinion. Luckily the interface for the lessons looks a lot better and since this is where you'll be spending most of your time it's the important part. There are different types of lessons though and things look slightly different depending on which you choose. It's still easy to use no matter which you are working with, but it would be nice to see some more consistency between the different suites.
The lessons that Transparent French Complete Edition offers are well designed and cover a wide range of topics which will be very useful for day to day French speaking life. The officially recommended way of working is to first use the proprietary 'Byki' memory algorithm system to learn as much vocabulary as you can handle and then move on to the structured lessons which will teach you the mechanics of the language as well as lots more useful words. 'Byki' is the software's own algorithm which plays to your own strengths and weaknesses to help you learn words and phrases. The structured lessons each consist of a topic with clearly defined activities, such as reading, speaking or writing. As you work through them you should become much more confident in your French speaking and can compare your pronunciation against a real native speaker by recording your voice through the software.
As you work through the different parts of the Transparent French Complete Edition suite you can easily check your progress at any time to see where you have done well and what there is still to complete. At the end of the structured lessons you can put your new skills to the test by trying out the 30 virtual reality situations where you can move around a virtual world and have conversations with the characters that populate it. This is about as close to the real thing as you can get on a computer and is something that very few language learning systems offer so we were very impressed.
Transparent French Complete Edition is a great value product when you take into account the range of content it offers. The virtual reality situations are an especially strong aspect of the software and keep things fun and interesting, while at the same time giving you confidence in your French skills. The vocabulary learning system, too, is very well designed and would even be very useful for expanding your vocabulary if you speak a little French already.
